Sickness and laziness

Was in Singapore for a few days attending a seminar. I've always been an admirer of Lee Kuan Yew. The best thing about Singapore is that it's so pedestrian-friendly. If I tried walking the same distance I did there here in Bangkok, I probably would've collapsed with a massive case of heatstroke. Overall, I had a good time. We spent most of our time on Orchard Road, which to me just seems like one giant strip mall. We did get out to the famous merlion statute, and also the historical Raffles Hotel. A bunch of famous British authors stayed there during the colonial period. It seemed quite prim and proper, and I loved it. I'm a sucker for historical places. Didn't go inside, but walked around and saw people taking tea. Fancy. Of course, then I got back to Thailand and fell ill. My dad says I don't take to travel very well. Just a few hours after I landed back in the Kingdom, I got all feverish and went to bed feeling so hot, you could've cooked an egg on my forehead. I'm better now, but feeling lazy as heck. Doesn't help that I have summer classes to teach and an exam to proctor. But hey, that's life, right? It never stops.

Final thought: Maybe I ought to start taking vitamins?

Sporcle!

I completely heart Sporcle - home of "mentally stimulating diversions". I hardly ever get all the answers on their quizzes, but I enjoy them nonetheless. I go there all the time. It's a great site. I've always been a fan of trivia; don't know why. I just love random information. Anyhow, wasting time there is better than trying to make sense of the nonsensical political situation over here.

Final thought: Who said the internet rots your brain?

Irony?

I've never been good at identifying irony, but is this it? Almost getting run over by a motorcycle the day after your birthday. Yup. I mean, forgot that whole "look both ways before you cross the street" stuff in Thailand; it seems like almost 90% of all motorcyclists are intent on plowing you down regardless of whether you exercise correct street-crossing procedures or not. And to add insult to almost-injury, instead of stopping and apologizing after nearly killing me (which I stopped him from doing by screaming like the nut I am), he just rode right on and gave me the evil eye from beneath his helmet. Creep.

Final thought: At least I'm still here, right?

Back at the Emporium

Had dinner with Smithi and Miko yesterday, after forever not seeing any of my friends. Would've been nice if we could've gotten the whole biomed gang together, but well, that's what happens when you grow up, I guess. It was fantastic seeing the both of them though. Smithi is a happily married woman; I swear, you can see the glow off her. Super happy for her. Miko is doing great too, although her hands smelled like shrimp yesterday, because she's on the buffet line at the Sheraton Grand, and apparently, yesterday was shrimp-shelling day. Anyhow, we had a dinner at the Emporium (an awful imitation of Italian; don't get me started) and as I was going up the bookstore, I saw this sorta famous Thai singer. Recognized his face, but his name eluded me, but to get more to the point, the guy was in short shorts. Little, tiny, denim shorts that showed off his criminally hairy legs. I have nothing against shorts...if you're going to bed or on the beach. But in the mall on a Friday night? Dude, you're not a surfer. Sheesh. Well, I suppose it's okay when you're a celebrity. Stuff that would be frowned upon in other people seems to be okay if you're famous.

Final thought: I just realized I hadn't been to the Emporium in years - ever since they opened Yu
ppie Hell right near where I work. God, I used to go there all the time in high school. How time flies!
